5. Palaces of Rome: Princes, Cardinals, Bankers and Rascals
3 hour walking tour including highlights of  Villa Farnesina, Corsini Palace, Spada Gallery, and Doria Pamphili Gallery

Villa Farnesina

Agostino "il Magnifico" Chigi (1465-1520), the richest man in Europe, once lived in this sumptuous villa built for him by the architect Baldassare Peruzzi between 1508 and 1511. Some of Rome's grandest feasts and parties, the likes of which were unknown since the days of imperial Rome, were staged here, often for popes, diplomats, artists, philosophers, and even high-priced courtesans. The Siennese banker would order his guests to toss their gold and silver plates into the Tiber after every course. Unknown to the guests, the savvy banker had placed nets under the water so that he could retrieve his treasures.

Even before this outrageous banker came to live here, the site was famous. Once it was the country villa of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra stayed here in 44 B.C. with their illegitimate child, Caesarion.
Chigi was Raphael's most ardent patron and friend, and he called upon this great artist to help decorate part of his villa, along with such towering figures as Francesco Penni, Giulo Romano, Sebastian del Piombo, and "Il Sodoma" (so called because of his sexual practices). Together these artists created a series of paintings that stand as one of the treasures of the Renaissance, especially the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche.

Corsini Palace

The  collection is installed in what was the 18th-century mansion of Pope Clemente XII (whose real name was Lorenzo Corsini, of the famous banking family). Before it was damaged by French attacks in 1849, the palace was once the grandest in Rome. Queen Christina died here in her bedroom in 1689, and Napoléon's mother, Letizia, once lived here as well. The palace is still rich in neoclassical works of the Napoléonic era.

The gallery hosts a wide array of paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries and is  is an outstanding treasure trove of such European masters as Van Dyck, although Italian artists dominate.  The masterpieces include  Caravaggio's St. John the Baptist and also a rendition of the same subject by Guido Reni who painted Salome with the Head of St. John the Baptist.   notably a St. Sebastian and a Madonna.

Spada Gallery

The Spada Palace, which faces Via Capo di Ferro, was built in 1540 according to Cardinal Capo di Ferro's will. In 1640 cardinal Bernardino Spada charged Francesco Borromini to renew his building. The Baroque façade is one of the most elegant and original existing in Rome, adorned, on the first floor, with big statues situated in niches. The columned gallery by Borromini seems four times longer than it really is thanks to its sloping floor perspective effects, its descending vault, its convergent walls, its particular columns. The marvelous inner rooms are adorned with marbles, stucco-works and frescoes.

Doria Pamhili Gallery

One of the most remarkable private art collections. Pamphilj family collected over 400 paintings from the 15th to the 18th century The Gallery contains over 400 works among which the famous portrait of Pope Innocenzo X by Velazquez.

1 person - Euro 200, 2 people - Euro 110 each, 3 people - Euro 80 each, 4 people - Euro 60 each, 5 people - Euro 55 each, 6-7 people - Euro 50 each, 8-11 people - Euro 45 each, 12-14 people - Euro 34 each.

6. Subterranean Rome Tour
3-Hour by Car and on Foot, The Appian way and the Catacombs, the Underground of St Clemente Church, the Roman House under St Paul and John

From here you will drive to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the sight where Rome's most famous convert is entombed. The next stop is Circus Maximus, the celebrated racetrack that once entertained over 200,000.

From the top of the Aventine Hill, Rome's panorama is laid before you. The tour ends at a secret keyhole, guarded by the Carabinieri and delivering a special sight to those who gaze through it.

After listening to your guide, it becomes clear why Rome became the center of Christendom and why relics, rituals and religion fueled the construction of the over 500 Roman houses of worship (from intimate chapels to imposing basilicas). The car tour is designed for access to those hard to reach places that individually would take an entire day to visit.
